Self-Assessment Review

Our career coaches offer two self-assessment tools for current students seeking to clarify and explore their career goals: Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI), and CareerLeader. After taking these online assessments, you may attend a workshop to learn about the results and then meet with a coach to discuss any impact the results may have on your professional development and career choices.

Gaining Experience Through Internships

Domestic and international internships facilitate career exploration and skills development and are tremendously valuable experiences.  Global Careers has a number of resources available to help students identify and seek promising opportunities.  Additionally, many academic programs also work with students in their concentration to develop relevant internships.

The majority of MA students participate in full-time internships during the summer between their first and second years and many also pursue part-time academic year internships during their second year.  

To learn more about internships, students can review the results of past summer internship evaluation surveys. Each individual survey contains contact information, a description of duties, and an evaluation of the merits of the internship.

The Johns Hopkins SAIS Summer Internship Fund (SIF)

The Summer Internship Fund (SIF) provides financial assistance to returning students with confirmed unpaid, full-time summer internships in the public, multilateral, or nonprofit sectors.  Awards are available to students on all three campuses, in any concentration, for work in any region between their first and second year (awards are not available for private-sector internships).    

Application materials and instructions are available in the spring. Students receiving funds from an academic program or other Johns Hopkins SAIS source are not eligible for the Summer Internship Fund. In 2017, 102 students received SIF awards with an average amount of $1,250. 

Professional Skills

We offer more than 35 highly marketable Professional Skills Courses each year, including several online courses which are also available during the summer and the winter inter-session.  Courses taught on campus are open to current students and to alumni on a space-available basis.  Online skills courses are open to both current students and alumni. SAISLeads Retreat

Two-day retreat offered in the end of August to returning and incoming students. 

This extremely interactive event is designed to explore individual leadership styles and potential and in doing so, better equips students to pursue career paths that are suitable to their personal and professional goals. Not only will participating students apply this knowledge to leadership roles at the school, they will continue this learning process and use these skills during their employment search and throughout their careers.

Employer Presentations

In 2015/16, 120 employers participated in on-campus presentations to promote their organization, explain the recruitment process, and in most cases, collect résumés for open internships and full-time positions.

Global Career Treks / Site Visits

We organize 18 global treks annually.  We also arrange site visits to local employers with a strong alumni base. These visits often include career panels that provide background on the variety of positions available, special topic presentations by senior alumni and recruiting presentations by human resources staff.  

Career Fair - Washington, DC Campus

Global Career Services hosts an annual Career Fair on the Washington, DC campus during the fall semester. The fair is a great way for students to learn about employers and practice their networking skills with alumni representing their organizations.

Washington Week - Washington, DC Campus

The Washington Week occurs in the fall semester and is a series of panels with alumni or area professionals to give students insight about different industries, including but not limited to, consulting, international development, energy and the environment, US federal government, think thanks, among others.

Alumni Career Advising - SAIS Europe Campus

A signature event on the SAIS Europe Campus is Alumni Weekend which occurs in the spring semester, usually in April.  During the 2017 Alumni Weekend, 60+ alumni spoke on over 20 career advising panels.  Panels vary from year to year, but this past year included sector topics such as: Diplomatic Service, Economic Policy, Energy & Environment, EU Institutions, Finance & Banking, International Development, Sovereign Analysis/Country Risk.  This is a very popular event; each year, nearly all students participate.

Company Visits - HNC Campus

In addition to hosting organizational representatives at the HNC, the Career Services office also organizes visits to companies' offices. In 2016/2017 HNC Career Services organized visits to Huawei and Chervon.

Career Panel Discussions

Throughout the academic year, students and alumni participate in career panel discussions, some of which are organized with the student-led Career Clubs. These discussions provide students with valuable sector information and insights about specific organizations and institutions.

Beijing Trek

Since 2012, the Hopkins-Nanjing Center has organized an annual spring career trek to Beijing to meet with employers across all sectors.  Students visit approximately 12 employers over four days, and meet many Beijing-based alumni during an alumni reception.

Brussels Trek

The Global Careers team in Europe organizes a career trek to Brussels in January every year. Students visit approximately eight employers over two days.

Asia Trek/Hong Kong

Students meet with approximately 20 employers, spending two days in Shanghai and three days in Hong Kong with an alumni reception in each city.

Houston Energy Trek

Because oil and gas are essential to geopolitics, the Houston Trek offers students an ideal opportunity to learn about the industry up close.

The New York United Nations Trek is a career exploration and alumni networking program for students interested in the United Nations, foundations and nonprofit organizations. It is co-organized by the Global Security & Conflict Management Club and Global Careers team in Washingotn, DC.

Be Involved, Gain Leadership Skills, Network!

Career Clubs are an excellent opportunity for students with similar professional interests to work together on exploring the field and employers in that sector.  We partner closely with these groups to develop programs and resources for specific fields of interest. Students are highly encouraged to get involved with at least one of these clubs to utilize their resources and to play a role in creating a professional development environment at the school.  Career Clubs also provide leadership opportunities for students.

Getting Involved at Johns Hopkins SAIS

Alumni continue to be one of our key assets for recruiting!  You know the curriculum, you recognize the quality of students and faculty, and you understand how this background fits into your own chosen profession. Brown Bags: Meet informally over breakfast or lunch to discuss your career and provide feedback to a smaller group of students on their interest in your field.

Employer Site Visits: Host a group of students at your place of employment.  Arrange for them to meet with a group of alumni and human resources staff.

Global Career Treks: Help us coordinate alumni panels and employer visits for a group of students in your city or region.

Informational Interviews: Meet one-on-one with students to talk more in depth about your career path and provide specific feedback on how a student's interest and background would fit into your field.

Mock Interviews: Help students practice specific interview skills.  We would be happy to organize sessions in our office, help connect students to you electronically, or send students to you.

Job & Internships Postings: You are welcome to advertise open positions on SAISWorks, a free, online job posting and internship resource for students and alumni which allows them to respond directly to the posting organization.

Resume Collections: In addition to posting an opportunity, Global Career Services can prepare customized books of cover letters and resumes for your consideration from qualified candidates who express specific interest in your job or internship posting.

Connecting with Students/Alumni

Employer Presentations: Employer presentations are an effective way to provide students with an overview of your organization, while building brand awareness on campus.  Presentations can be either formal or informal and often range from auditorium style engagements with technical support to informal 'brown bag' lunches with smaller group of students. 

Employer Site Visits: For employers near one of our locations, we can easily arrange to bring a group of students to your site for a presentation by your human resources staff and/or by alumni employed at your organization.

Career Fair: Global Career Services hosts an annual Career Fair in the fall on the Washington, DC campus.  The fair is a convenient way for companies to increase their visibility on campus, recruit talent, and to network with highly-motivated students and alumni.

Global Career Treks: Global Career Services organizes 14 career treks every year to cities in the United States, Asia and Europe. Career treks provide you with the opportunity to network with students who are interested in learning about future employment opportunities. 

Video Conferencing:  If you want to interview students without incurring travel costs, we can facilitate video interviewing.

Career Clubs:  Students are actively involved in a variety of sector-specific career clubs including conflict management, consulting, development, defense & intelligence, diplomacy, energy and environment, finance, trade, women in leadership etc.  Employers are often invited to work with clubs on their various events, allowing employers to target and network with a select group of students.
